What a Hydrostatic Test Is
A hydrostatic plumbing test checks whether the drain lines beneath a slab hold water. A licensed plumber isolates the system, usually by inserting a test ball at the main cleanout, then fills the drain lines with water to a defined level and monitors whether that level holds.
If the water level drops, water is leaving the system somewhere. Under a slab, that means water is entering the soil beneath your foundation continuously.
The test is straightforward and quick. What makes it significant is what a failed test implies for the foundation work you may be about to commit to. Our slab foundation repair page covers how this fits into a project.
Why It Matters Before a Lift
Two separate reasons, and both are practical.
Lifting stresses the plumbing. The drain lines run under the slab and connect up through it. When the slab is raised, the sections attached to the structure move with it while the sections in the ground do not. Old or already-compromised lines, particularly cast iron in homes built before the 1970s, are the ones most likely to fail under that movement.
A leak may be the cause of the movement. This is the more important reason. Water entering the soil beneath a slab continuously will swell expansive clay in that area. The result is center heave: the interior of the slab rising rather than settling. Installing piers under a heaving slab does not stop the heave, does not fix the leak, and adds cost to a project that was, at root, a plumbing repair.

When Testing Is Recommended
Testing is recommended where one or more of the following applies:
- The elevation profile shows a rising centre. The strongest indicator, because it points directly at moisture accumulating beneath the interior.
- The home has original cast-iron drain lines. Common in San Antonio housing built before the 1970s, and a known failure mode at that age.
- A significant lift is planned. The more the slab moves, the more the connections are stressed.
- Damp or warm spots are present in the floor. Localised moisture without an obvious source.
- Water usage has increased unexplained. Which points to a supply-side leak rather than a drain one, tested differently.
- Sewer odours are noticeable. A drain line breach can vent.
- Movement developed quickly. Soil-driven movement is usually gradual; leak-driven movement can be comparatively rapid.
Where none of these applies and the profile shows clear settlement, testing may not be warranted. The recommendation should come with a reason, not as a routine add-on.
Testing After the Lift
A post-lift test serves a different purpose: confirming the lines still hold after the structure has moved.
Where a pre-lift test was done and passed, a post-lift test establishes whether the movement caused damage. That is a clear before-and-after record and it removes ambiguity about when a break occurred.
Where no pre-lift test was done and a post-lift test fails, the question of whether the break pre-existed the work or was caused by it is much harder to answer, and it is exactly the kind of dispute that turns a completed project into an argument.
The practical argument for testing first
It is not primarily about finding a leak. It is about establishing the condition of the plumbing at a known point in time. That record protects both parties, which is why we recommend it where it is warranted rather than treating it as an optional upsell.
What Happens If the Test Fails
The sequence changes. A failed test means the plumbing is addressed first.
- The plumber locates the break, usually with a camera inspection.
- Repair options are assessed: access from inside the slab, tunnelling from outside, or a rerouting solution.
- The repair is carried out.
- The soil beneath the slab is given time to normalise, since it has been absorbing water.
- The foundation is re-evaluated. The profile may look substantially different once the moisture source is removed.
That last step matters. We have seen profiles where the apparent foundation problem was largely the consequence of the leak, and where the recommended scope after the plumbing repair was materially smaller than it would have been beforehand.
Who Does What
The test and any plumbing repair are carried out by a licensed plumber. Foundation work is carried out by us. We coordinate scheduling where both are involved, and the plumbing report comes from the plumber directly to you.
Keeping that separation matters. A single party assessing both the plumbing and the foundation, and selling both, has an interest in the conclusion. Two independent assessments is the better arrangement for you.
